Academy Women is now four years old and growing to better meet the needs of our members. To develop and fund meaningful programs which will have a lasting impact on women’s lives, AcademyWomen needs your tax deductible donations. We are supported entirely by volunteer hours and donations; we do not currently utilize a paid staff. Generous donors have agreed to fund our administrative overhead, so 100% of your donations will be allocated to our program work.

The Defense Task Force on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence at the Service Academies, recommended service academies implement long distance mentoring for women cadets and midshipmen. AcademyWomen will be able to do exactly this with the e-mentor program!

The program will be implemented through a state-of-the-art e-mentor website which will pair protégés with mentors for one-on-one, email-based mentoring (e-mentoring) relationships. A facilitator will help with general program management and provide tips to enhance the mentorship relationship.

The AcademyWomen e-mentor Program is being developed by a team of AcademyWomen members led by Stefanie Goebel. Once the program is fully developed and ready to pilot, AcademyWomen members will be invited to sign up as both protégés and mentors.

Help us Update Our List of Distinguished Graduates
Academy Women is in the process of updating its list of distinguished graduates. We need your help to ensure this list is as current and complete as possible. We’d love to hear from you. Send us your recommendations from all of the officer development programs to feland@academywomen.org.

AcademyWomen is working with Donna Bartee-Robertson to begin a dialogue regarding potential new approaches to maternity leave for women in the military. Donna has conducted extensive research on this topic and is considering drafting a proposal that would be mutually beneficial to both women and the military in stemming the difficulties associated with current maternity leave policies. Donna seeks to allow military women to take advantage of the residual leave they have accumulated to supplement their standard six week maternity leave (unless the command deems that the mother is in a mission critical position). Congress is very interested in this issue and would like your opinion. If you are interested in joining this dialogue, please send your comments, thoughts, and/or personal stories on this subject to Donna. Together we would like to help develop a strong policy proposal. LCDR Donna Bartee, JAGC, USN, is originally from Florida and attended the University of Florida for her undergraduate degree in Nursing. She entered active duty as an Air Force psychiatric nurse and attended American University Law School’s part-time, night program while Stationed at Andrews AFB. She graduated with her Juris Doctorate in 1994, and joined the Naval Judge Advocate Corp in 1995. LCDR Bartee has practiced criminal litigation, administrative law and national security law during her 12 years in the Navy. She has bar memberships in Georgia and Florida.
