Hillary Clinton, Through a Lens Wrongly? Deborah Tannen, an author and a professor of linguistics at Georgetown University, recently wrote in the Washington Post that women in authority, including Hillary Clinton, are confronted with a “double bind”: “If they speak in ways expected of leaders, they're seen as too aggressive, but if they speak in ways expected of women, they're seen as less confident and competent than they really are.” She goes on to state that “we think we're judging people as individuals, but gender is like a contact lens permanently affixed to the eye ... women's status as wives, {mothers and nurturers} is such a huge part of our image ... that it tends to obscure other roles.” What do you think?
