NAME CHANGE? WE NEED YOUR ADVICE! Many non-academy graduates have told us that they would like to become members of AcademyWomen, but wonder if we are restricted to only service academy graduates. Our mission is to provide support to women from ALL officer development programs, and we intend to reflect that inclusiveness in all that we do.

Should AcademyWomen have a name that better reflects our mission? We welcome any thoughts you may have on the subject of choosing a name that is more inclusive of all women officers. Let us know what you think. Please forward your ideas or suggestions for new, more inclusive names.

O-6s, GENERAL & FLAG OFFICERS NEEDED! A fellow AcademyWomen and researcher at Harvard University is seeking insights from female officers who have reached the rank of O-6 or above. Paula Broadwell is a USMA '95 graduate, MI Army Reserve MAJ, and is currently in graduate school at Harvard University. Paula is writing a chapter for the 6th edition of a book entitled Military Leadership as part of her work at the Harvard Center for Public Leadership and the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. The nature of the chapter is to capture a snapshot of the "difference 'difference' makes." Paula seeks to profile current O-6s , Generals and Admirals and conduct a survey concerning the leadership attributes they feel have helped them get to where they are. The information gathered will help to offer a qualitative profile of their experiences including training, mentoring, breaking glass ceilings and soliciting advice for future generations.

Study Finds Disconnect between Employers and Transitioning Military Personnel

According to a 2007 Monster.com survey on the utilization of veteran talent in the workforce, 81% percent of transitioning military personnel surveyed reveal that they do not feel fully prepared for the process of entering the job market. Of those who feel unprepared: 72% feel unprepared to negotiate salary and benefits; 76% report an inability to effectively translate their military skills to civilian terms; and 57% are unsure of how to network professionally. AcademyWomen was founded in 2003 to support current, former and future women military officers. AcademyWomen’s mission is to support, inspire and enable women to reach their full potential as leaders in the military and throughout their lives.

AcademyWomen offers an annual symposium, quarterly newsletters, and is developing a cross-service e-mentor program for all military women. In the future, AcademyWomen will offer regional events to strengthen dialogue between academy women. We also plan to conduct research focusing on the professional development of academy women in the military, academy women transitioning to civilian careers, and academy women in professions subsequent to their active duty service.

Our members include military officers, astronauts, pilots, combat leaders, ship commanding officers, business executives, diplomats, civic leaders, and entrepreneurs. AcademyWomen members are the women pioneers who bravely sought military training and now represent a new and outstanding paradigm of leadership.
