AcademyWomen Board Members Stefanie Goebel and Maria Cerniauskas , recently presented at a conference entitled Women in the Military: Where They Stand sponsored by the Women's Research and Education Institute (WREI) in Arlington, VA.
The conference was held May 10 - 11 at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Arlington, VA. More than two dozen presenters reported on the history, current status, and future prospects of military women in the United States and around the world.
Maria and Stefanie presented on the development of AcademyWomen’s eMentor Program. In their presentation they discussed the concept of mentoring, the reasons a virtual mentoring program is needed by our members and the functionality of the AW eMentor program.
Other conference panels included: Gender, Sexuality and the Military; International Issues; Deployed Women; Military Family Matters; the Benefits of Serving and Sexual Assault and Violence in the Military. WREI's mission is to identify issues affecting women and their roles in the family, workplace, and public arena, and to inform and help shape the public policy debate on these issues. This conference is convened biennially as part of the WREI's Women in the Military project established in 1990 to provide information and policy analysis on issues important to military women and women veterans to government policy makers, scholars, the media and the general public. Maria Cerniauskas, LMFT, is one of two Co-Directors of the Academy Women eMentor Program. During the past decade she has served in various clinical, supervisory, and leadership roles that foster the well-being of individuals and families. A licensed marriage and family therapist by training and a systems thinker by nature, she received her MSMFT degree from Central Connecticut State University , her Bachelor of General Studies degree from the University of Connecticut , and her Bachelor of Philosophy degree from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome . Maria comes from a family with a strong history of military service, including many USMA graduates. She is passionate about serving the needs of military personnel, veterans, and their families by empowering them to continue their paths of courage, commitment, and personal growth through and beyond their service in the military. Maria is currently employed as a counselor at the Hartford Vet Center .
Stefanie Goebel is one of two Co-Directors for the AcademyWomen eMentor Program. She has over 15 years experience developing and implementing leadership and mentoring programs for girls and women in both government and nonprofit organizations. While on active duty in the late 80’s Stefanie led the tri-service Women Officer’s Professional Association (WOPA) in Hawaii, strengthening the group’s emphasis on professional development and networking. In the mid-90’s she developed and implemented several leadership and networking workshops for high school girls through the American Association of University Women (AAUW). In the late-90’s she created a small e-mentoring program that paired young women cadets at two private military colleges with women grads of the U.S. Naval Academy. Most recently, Stefanie worked with a small nonprofit to coordinate the development of a leadership and mentoring program for high school girls with disabilities funded by the U.S. Department of Education. She is a 1980 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis and holds an MA in National Security Affairs from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and an MA in Women’s Studies from the University of Arizona.
